Canada Votes: Post mortem – Liberal Party

How the mighty have fallen. Once known as the “Big Red Machine” and Canada’s “natural governing party”, the Liberal Party is no more, in a manner of speaking. When faced with the number of seats that went to the Conservatives and the NDP, having around 30 seats in Parliament is virtually the same as having none. What is more, the party leader himself, Michael Ignatieff, has failed to retain his own seat in former Liberal stronghold Toronto, and has now resigned to return to teaching.

Canada Votes: Layton rides new popularity wave, Iggy prepares for new career as televangelist

NDP leader Jack Layton is popular, yes, really popular. In Québec and Western Canada, his numbers are picking up speed. In the most recent poll, he is now Quebeckers’ first choice, while Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has been sent to last place with only 9% of support.
