Huffington Post arrives in Canada

This is a day to be celebrated. Canada’s media and journalism scene just got richer … and moved into the 21st century: the Huffington Post is now available as a separate Canadian edition complete with Canadian voices.

Oh great, a lot of right-wingers will say, just what we need: another left-wing mouthpiece.

While the HuffPo is indeed left-leaning, this has never stopped this online newspaper from offering good content throughout its existence.

For Canada, it is a welcome addition, and it is to be hoped that there will soon be a Canadian version of the already-existing HuffPo iPad app.

For example, we now get to hear from Stephen LeDrew again, who left an indelible mark from his time on a Global TV current affairs show, where he pounded Ezra Levant into the ground every Sunday – then as now, Mr. Levant invariably loses every argument when confronted with sound mind and reason.

What strikes one as odd, though, is the animosity readers have instantly shown the new Canadian edition. The comment section of the introductory blog post is full of venom and hostility directed at the new website. Even more alarming are the Canadian commenters who say that they don’t care about Canadian news; they want American news. Not too bright, obviously, given their anti-Canadian and pro-US stance, they totally ignore the fact that they can simply switch to the US edition by clicking the appropriate link or entering the .com address of the site, rather than its new .ca one.

As Canadians, we have every reason to be proud, particularly in light of the events over the last two to three years. We are not inferior to our American neighbours, and why, indeed, should we not be entitled to being able to read our own stories on a site like HuffPo?

Being so closely linked to the US, of course, Canadians actually have a duty to keep up with the news in that country, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop following our own domestic news.

At any rate, Canadian Views welcomes the Huffington Post to Canada.

  1. "entering the .com address of the site"

Currently entering the .com address forwards you to the .ca site automatically if they think you are from Canada.
